In the fall of 2016, we released balenaOS 2.0 (then known as resinOS) 2.0 out into the world. Since then we’ve worked hard to incorporate our learnings from the field and continually improve balenaOS. In the last two years, we’ve increased the number of supported device types by over 3x, added the much-anticipated support for running multiple containers on devices, improved filesystem resilience, switched to a more capable and robust networking stack and generally made the OS more stable and user accessible.
Today, over 98% of devices on balenaCloud are using balenaOS 2.x and we have exciting plans for future improvements With this in mind, we have decided the time has finally come to say goodbye to the 1.x line. Taking this step will allow us to simplify our infrastructure and our support processes, which will, in turn, enable us to concentrate on delivering improved products and experiences to all balena users.
When?
From May 1st, 2019, we will no longer support devices running 1.x versions of balenaOS.
What will happen to devices running 1.x?
Your devices will continue to show in the dashboard and will run their existing applications, but they will no longer be able to receive updates.
How do I upgrade?
Version 1.8.0 or above – You can carry out host OS upgrades from your balenaCloud dashboard.
Version 1.8.0 or earlier – You will need to contact support for upgrade assistance.
